The Challenge

The 500-bed Accra Teaching Hospital serves as a regional referral center for cardiac surgery, neonatal intensive care, and emergency trauma. Prior to the upgrade, the hospital relied on a single aging 300kVA open-type generator that frequently failed during grid outages, putting life-support equipment and operating theaters at risk.

The new backup power system had to meet three strict requirements: (1) sub-10-second automatic transfer to full load, (2) noise levels below 65 dB(A) at 7 meters because the plant room is adjacent to patient wards, and (3) fuel autonomy of at least 12 hours for the full hospital load during prolonged grid failures.

Our Solution

Jinjia Power designed a redundant N+1 configuration using two 500kVA Perkins-powered silent generator sets housed in acoustic enclosures rated at 62 dB(A) at 7 meters. The sets are synchronized through a Deepsea DSE8610 parallel controller and connected to the hospital main switchboard via a Socomec ATyS automatic transfer switch.

Each generator was fitted with a 1,000-liter internal base fuel tank and a 5,000-liter external day tank, giving more than 16 hours of runtime at full load. We also installed a remote monitoring module that sends SMS and email alerts to the hospital engineering team for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and mains failure events.

Installation was completed in 14 days, including concrete plinth, exhaust silencer stack, intake ventilation, and full-load load-bank testing at 110% of rated capacity for one hour.

Fuel autonomy

Since commissioning in March 2024, the system has responded to 23 grid failures with an average switchover time of 7.2 seconds. No unplanned downtime has been recorded. The hospital's engineering manager confirmed that ICU ventilators, operating microscopes, and blood-storage refrigerators now maintain uninterrupted power.

Acoustic measurements taken at the ward boundary show 58 dB(A) during daytime operation, well below the 65 dB(A) contract limit. Fuel consumption is averaging 112 liters per hour at full hospital load, matching our pre-sale simulation within 3%.
